[597] Then the Blessed One replied to the brahmin Brahmāyu in verses:
"One who knows his past abodes,
who sees heaven and the states of loss (apāya),
and who has attained the destruction of birth (jāti) —
he is a sage (muni) consummated in direct knowledge (abhiññā).
He knows the mind (citta) to be purified,
released from lusts (rāga) in every way;
with birth and death abandoned,
complete in the holy life (brahmacariya),
gone beyond all dhammas —
such a one is declared a Buddha."
