[676] "What do you think, Dhanañjāni? Suppose someone here were to conduct himself contrary to the Dhamma, conduct himself unrighteously, for the sake of his mother and father, and on account of that conduct contrary to the Dhamma, that unrighteous conduct, the wardens of hell (nirayapālā) were to drag him off to hell (niraya). Would he obtain his plea, saying: 'It was for the sake of my mother and father that I conducted myself contrary to the Dhamma, conducted myself unrighteously — let not the wardens of hell drag me to hell'? Or would his mother and father obtain their plea, saying: 'It was for our sake that he conducted himself contrary to the Dhamma, conducted himself unrighteously — let not the wardens of hell drag him to hell'?"
"Not so, worthy Sāriputta. Rather, even as he wailed, the wardens of hell would cast him down into hell."
