[682] "What do you think, Dhanañjāni? Suppose a certain person here were to conduct himself contrary to the Dhamma, to conduct himself unrighteously, for the sake of his departed ancestors, and on account of his conduct contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteous conduct, the wardens of hell were to drag him off to hell. Would he obtain his plea, saying: 'It was for the sake of my departed ancestors that I conducted myself contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteously; let not the wardens of hell drag me to hell'? Or would his departed ancestors obtain their plea, saying: 'It was for our sake that he conducted himself contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteously; let not the wardens of hell drag him to hell'?"
