[683] "What do you think, Dhanañjāni? Suppose someone here were to conduct himself contrary to the Dhamma, to conduct himself unrighteously, for the sake of the deities, and on account of that conduct contrary to the Dhamma, that unrighteous conduct, the wardens of hell were to drag him off to hell. Would he obtain his plea: 'It was for the sake of the deities that I conducted myself contrary to the Dhamma, conducted myself unrighteously; let not the wardens of hell drag me to hell'? Or would his deities obtain their plea: 'It was for our sake that he conducted himself contrary to the Dhamma, conducted himself unrighteously; let not the wardens of hell drag him to hell'?"
