[684] "What do you think, Dhanañjāni? Suppose someone here were to behave contrary to the Dhamma (adhammacārī), to behave unrighteously (visamacārī), for the sake of the king, and on account of that conduct contrary to the Dhamma and unrighteous conduct the wardens of hell (nirayapālā) were to drag him off to hell (niraya). Would he obtain [release] by pleading: 'It was for the sake of the king that I behaved contrary to the Dhamma and behaved unrighteously; let not the wardens of hell [drag] me to hell'? Or would the king obtain it on his behalf by pleading: 'It was for our sake that he behaved contrary to the Dhamma and behaved unrighteously; let not the wardens of hell [drag] him to hell'?"
"Not so, worthy Sāriputta. Rather, even as he wailed, the wardens of hell would cast him down into hell."
