[710] Then Subha the student, Todeyya's son, having assented to that householder, approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Subha the student, Todeyya's son, said this to the Blessed One: "Master Gotama, the brahmins say thus: 'The householder is one who accomplishes the true way (ñāya), the wholesome Dhamma; one gone forth is not one who accomplishes the true way, the wholesome Dhamma.' What does Master Gotama say to this?"
"Student, herein I am one who speaks after analysis (vibhajjavāda); herein I am not one who speaks one-sidedly. I do not praise wrong practice on the part of either a householder or one gone forth; for, student, whether a householder or one gone forth, one who has practised wrongly, by reason of that wrong practice, is not one who accomplishes the true way, the wholesome Dhamma. I praise right practice on the part of either a householder or one gone forth; for, student, whether a householder or one gone forth, one who has practised rightly, by reason of that right practice, is one who accomplishes the true way, the wholesome Dhamma."
