[107] Then the brahmin Vassakāra, the chief minister of Magadha, while supervising the works at Rājagaha, approached the workplace of the brahmin Gopaka-Moggallāna, where the Venerable Ānanda was. Having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Ānanda, and when the courteous and memorable talk of greeting was concluded, he sat down at one side. Seated at one side, the brahmin Vassakāra, the chief minister of Magadha, said this to the Venerable Ānanda: "For what talk, worthy Ānanda, are you sitting together here at present? And what conversation of yours was left unfinished in between?"
"Here, brahmin, the brahmin Gopaka-Moggallāna said this to me: 'Is there, worthy Ānanda, even a single bhikkhu who is endowed in each and every way, in every respect and entirely, with those dhammas with which the worthy Gotama, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One (arahaṃ sammāsambuddho), was endowed?' When this was said, brahmin, I said this to the brahmin Gopaka-Moggallāna: 'There is not, brahmin, even a single bhikkhu who is endowed in each and every way, in every respect and entirely, with those dhammas with which the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, was endowed. For the Blessed One, brahmin, was the arouser of the unarisen path (magga), the producer of the path not produced, the declarer of the path not declared; he was the knower of the path, the discoverer of the path, the one skilled in the path. And the disciples now abide following the path, becoming endowed with it afterwards.' This, brahmin, was the conversation between us and the brahmin Gopaka-Moggallāna that was left unfinished; then you arrived."
