[216] And of what kind, venerable sir, is the acquisition of views which, when cultivated, causes unwholesome states to increase and wholesome states to decline? Here, venerable sir, a certain person holds a view such as this: 'There is nothing given, nothing sacrificed, nothing offered; there is no fruit or result of deeds well done or ill done; there is no this world, no other world; there is no mother, no father; there are no beings spontaneously reborn; there are in the world no ascetics and brahmins who are rightly faring and rightly practiced, who, having realized this world and the other world for themselves by direct knowledge, make them known.' An acquisition of views of such a kind, venerable sir, when cultivated, causes unwholesome states to increase and wholesome states to decline.
