[217] "Venerable sir, cultivating what kind of acquisition of views (diṭṭhipaṭilābha) do unwholesome states decline and wholesome states increase? Here, venerable sir, a certain person holds such a view: 'There is what is given, there is what is offered, there is what is sacrificed; there is fruit and result of deeds well done and ill done; there is this world, there is the other world; there is mother, there is father; there are beings spontaneously reborn (opapātika); there are in the world ascetics and brahmins who have gone rightly and practiced rightly, who, having realized this world and the other world for themselves by direct knowledge, make them known.' Cultivating such an acquisition of views, venerable sir, unwholesome states decline and wholesome states increase.
"When this was said by the Blessed One: 'Bhikkhus, I say the acquisition of views is of two kinds — that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated — and each of these is an acquisition of views,' it was in dependence on this that it was said."
