[206] "'Bhikkhus, I say that mental conduct (manosamācāra) is of two kinds: that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated; and each of these is itself mental conduct' — thus indeed this was said by the Blessed One. And with reference to what was this said? Venerable sir, such mental conduct as, when one cultivates it, causes unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) to increase and wholesome states (kusalā dhammā) to decline — mental conduct of that kind should not be cultivated. And, venerable sir, such mental conduct as, when one cultivates it, causes unwholesome states to decline and wholesome states to increase — mental conduct of that kind should be cultivated."
