[224] "'Bhikkhus, verbal conduct (vacīsamācāra), I say, … Bhikkhus, mental conduct (manosamācāra) … the arising of thought (cittuppāda) … the acquisition of perception (saññāpaṭilābha) … the acquisition of view (diṭṭhipaṭilābha) … Bhikkhus, the acquisition of individual existence (attabhāvapaṭilābha), I say, is of two kinds: that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated; and the one, in relation to the other, is an acquisition of individual existence' — thus indeed this was said by me. And in dependence on what was this said? Sāriputta, when one cultivates such an acquisition of individual existence that unwholesome states increase and wholesome states diminish, such an acquisition of individual existence should not be cultivated. But, Sāriputta, when one cultivates such an acquisition of individual existence that unwholesome states diminish and wholesome states increase, such an acquisition of individual existence should be cultivated.
