[209] "'Bhikkhus, I say that the arising of mind (cittuppāda) is twofold: that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated; and each of these is an arising of mind (citta)' — so indeed this was said by the Blessed One. And in dependence on what was this said? Venerable sir, such an arising of mind that, when one cultivates it, unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) increase and wholesome states (kusalā dhammā) decline — such an arising of mind should not be cultivated. But, venerable sir, such an arising of mind that, when one cultivates it, unwholesome states decline and wholesome states increase — such an arising of mind should be cultivated."
