[231] When this was said, the Venerable Sāriputta said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, of this statement spoken in brief by the Blessed One, whose meaning was not analyzed in detail, I understand the detailed meaning thus:
"'Robes, Sāriputta, I say are of two kinds: that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated' — thus indeed this was said by the Blessed One. And with reference to what was this said? Venerable sir, such robes as, when one cultivates them, unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) increase and wholesome states (kusalā dhammā) diminish — such robes should not be cultivated. And such robes as, when one cultivates them, unwholesome states diminish and wholesome states increase — such robes should be cultivated. 'Robes, Sāriputta, I say are of two kinds: that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated' — thus what was said by the Blessed One, it was with reference to this that it was said.
"… such almsfood should not be cultivated … such almsfood should be cultivated … such a lodging should not be cultivated … such a lodging should be cultivated … such a village should not be cultivated … such a village should be cultivated … such a market town should not be cultivated … such a market town should be cultivated … such a city should not be cultivated … such a city should be cultivated … such a country should not be cultivated … such a country should be cultivated …
"'A person, Sāriputta, I say is of two kinds: one who should be cultivated and one who should not be cultivated' — thus indeed this was said by the Blessed One. And with reference to what was this said? Venerable sir, such a person as, when one cultivates him, unwholesome states increase and wholesome states diminish — such a person should not be cultivated. And such a person as, when one cultivates him, unwholesome states diminish and wholesome states increase — such a person should be cultivated.
