[208] "Venerable sir, when one cultivates mental behavior of what kind do unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) decline and wholesome states (kusalā dhammā) increase? Here, venerable sir, a certain person is uncovetous: he does not covet the wealth and belongings of another, thinking, 'Oh, that what belongs to another were mine!' And he is one whose mind (citta) is without ill will (byāpāda), whose mental intentions are uncorrupted: 'May these beings, free from affliction, untroubled, and happy, maintain themselves!' Venerable sir, when one cultivates mental behavior of this kind, unwholesome states decline and wholesome states increase.
"So it was with reference to this that the Blessed One said: 'Bhikkhus, I say that mental behavior (manosamācāra) is of two kinds: that which should be cultivated and that which should not be cultivated; and each is mental behavior in contrast to the other.'"
