[220] "Venerable sir, when one pursues what kind of acquisition of individuality (attabhāvapaṭilābha) do unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) decline and wholesome states (kusalā dhammā) increase? Venerable sir, for one who has generated an unafflicted (abyāpajjha) acquisition of individuality — whereby, owing to its consummated state, unwholesome states decline and wholesome states increase.
"So when it was said by the Blessed One: 'Bhikkhus, I speak of the acquisition of individuality as twofold: that which should be pursued and that which should not be pursued; and each of these is itself an acquisition of individuality' — it was in dependence on this that it was said.
"Venerable sir, it is thus that I understand in detail the meaning of this that was spoken by the Blessed One in brief, without the meaning being analyzed in detail."
