Bahudhātukasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 14 · Section 239

[239] "But, venerable sir, might there be another way (pariyāya) in which a bhikkhu could rightly be called 'a bhikkhu skilled in the elements (dhātu)'?" "There could be, Ānanda. There are, Ānanda, these six elements: the element of pleasure (sukhadhātu), the element of suffering (dukkha) (dukkhadhātu), the element of joy (somanassadhātu), the element of grief (domanassadhātu), the element of equanimity (upekkhādhātu), and the element of ignorance (avijjādhātu). When, Ānanda, a bhikkhu knows and sees these six elements, to that extent too he can rightly be called 'a bhikkhu skilled in the elements.'"
