[240] "But, venerable sir, might there be yet another way in which a bhikkhu is qualified to be called 'skilled in the elements (dhātu)'?"
"There might, Ānanda. There are, Ānanda, these six elements: the element of sensuality (kāmadhātu), the element of renunciation (nekkhammadhātu), the element of ill will (byāpādadhātu), the element of non-ill will (abyāpādadhātu), the element of cruelty (vihiṃsādhātu), and the element of non-cruelty (avihiṃsādhātu). Since, Ānanda, a bhikkhu knows and sees these six elements, to this extent too, Ānanda, he is qualified to be called 'a bhikkhu skilled in the elements.'"
