[404] "Aggivessana, if an elderly royal bull elephant, well tamed and well trained, dies, it is reckoned thus: 'The elderly royal elephant has died, has passed away, with the death of one tamed.' If a middle-aged royal elephant, Aggivessana, … If a young royal elephant, Aggivessana, well tamed and well trained, dies, it is reckoned thus: 'The young royal elephant has died, has passed away, with the death of one tamed.' So too, Aggivessana, if an elder bhikkhu whose taints (āsava) are destroyed dies, he is reckoned thus: 'The elder bhikkhu has died, has passed away, with the death of one tamed.' If a bhikkhu of middle standing, Aggivessana, … If a newly ordained bhikkhu, Aggivessana, whose taints are destroyed dies, he is reckoned thus: 'The newly ordained bhikkhu has died, has passed away, with the death of one tamed.'"
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Delighted, the novice (samaṇuddesa) Aciravata rejoiced in the Blessed One's words.
