[477] Bhikkhus, there are animals born in the animal realm (tiracchānagatā pāṇā) that feed on dung. Smelling the scent of dung from afar, they run toward it, thinking, 'Here we shall eat! Here we shall eat!' Just as brahmins run toward the scent of a burnt offering, thinking, 'Here we shall eat! Here we shall eat!' — even so, bhikkhus, there are animals that feed on dung. Smelling the scent of dung from afar, they run toward it, thinking, 'Here we shall eat! Here we shall eat!' And which, bhikkhus, are the animals that feed on dung? Chickens, pigs, dogs, jackals, and whatever other animals there may be that feed on dung. That fool, bhikkhus, who formerly was a devourer of tastes (rasādo) here and did evil deeds here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn in the companionship of those beings who feed on dung.
