[478] Bhikkhus, there are animals (tiracchānagatā pāṇā) that are born in darkness, age in darkness, and die in darkness. And which animals, bhikkhus, are born in darkness, age in darkness, and die in darkness? Insects, grasshoppers, earthworms, or whatever other animals there may be that are born in darkness, age in darkness, and die in darkness. Bhikkhus, that same fool who formerly here was a devourer of flavors (rasāda), having done evil deeds here, with the breakup of the body, after death, is reborn in the company of those beings — those beings that are born in darkness, age in darkness, and die in darkness.
