[514] Bhikkhus, the wardens of hell throw that being into the Great Hell (Mahāniraya). Now, bhikkhus, as to that Great Hell:
Four are its corners, four its doors,
divided and measured out in portions;
bounded by a rampart of iron,
roofed over with iron.
Its floor, too, is made of iron,
blazing, charged with fiery heat;
pervading a hundred yojanas all around,
it stands at all times.
Bhikkhus, from the eastern wall of that Great Hell a flame surges up and strikes against the western wall; from the western wall a flame surges up and strikes against the eastern wall; from the northern wall a flame surges up and strikes against the southern wall; from the southern wall a flame surges up and strikes against the northern wall; from below a flame surges up and strikes against the top; from the top a flame surges up and strikes against the bottom. There he feels painful, sharp, and bitter feelings (vedanā); yet he does not die so long as that evil deed is not exhausted.
