[522] Bhikkhus, the wardens of hell (nirayapālā), having pulled that being out with a hook and set him upon dry ground, say this: "Good man, what do you wish for?" He says this: "I am hungry, venerable sirs." Then, bhikkhus, the wardens of hell pry open his mouth with a heated iron spike—burning, blazing, glowing—and place into his mouth a heated ball of metal—burning, blazing, glowing. It burns his lips, it burns his mouth, it burns his throat, it burns his stomach, and it passes out from the lower part, taking with it his entrails and mesentery. There he feels feelings (vedanā) that are painful, sharp, and bitter; and yet he does not die so long as that evil deed (pāpakamma) has not been exhausted.
