[582] The Blessed One said this: "Here, student (māṇava), some woman or man is one who kills living beings — cruel, bloody-handed, set upon striking and slaughter, without mercy toward living beings. Through that deed (kamma), thus completed, thus undertaken, upon the breakup of the body, after death, he reappears in a state of deprivation (apāya), a bad destination (duggati), a place of ruin (vinipāta), hell (niraya). If, upon the breakup of the body, after death, he does not reappear in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell, but instead comes to the human state, then wherever he is subsequently reborn, he is short-lived. This, student, is the way of practice (paṭipadā) that leads to being short-lived, namely: being one who kills living beings — cruel, bloody-handed, set upon striking and slaughter, without mercy toward living beings."
