[592] "Here, student (māṇava), some woman or man is obstinate and arrogant: he does not pay homage to one who should be paid homage to, does not rise up for one for whom one should rise up, does not give a seat to one worthy of a seat, does not give way to one worthy of the way, does not honor one who should be honored, does not respect one who should be respected, does not esteem one who should be esteemed, does not venerate one who should be venerated. Because of that action (kamma), thus completed, thus undertaken, with the breakup of the body, after death, he reappears in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the lower world, hell. But if, with the breakup of the body, after death, he does not reappear in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, the lower world, hell, and if instead he comes to the human state, then wherever he is afterwards reborn, he is one born in a low family. This, student, is the way of practice that leads to birth in a low family, namely: one is obstinate and arrogant; one does not pay homage to one who should be paid homage to, does not rise up for one for whom one should rise up, does not give a seat to one worthy of a seat, does not give way to one worthy of the way, does not honor one who should be honored, does not respect one who should be respected, does not esteem one who should be esteemed, does not venerate one who should be venerated."
