[583] Here, student, some woman or man, having abandoned the killing of living beings (pāṇātipāta), abstains from killing living beings; with rod laid down, with weapon laid down, conscientious, given to kindness, that person dwells compassionate for the welfare of all living beings. Because of that action, thus completed and thus undertaken, with the breaking up of the body, after death, that person reappears in a good destination (sugati), a heavenly world. But if, with the breaking up of the body, after death, that person does not reappear in a good destination, a heavenly world — if he comes to the human state — then wherever he is later reborn, he is long-lived. This, student, is the practice (paṭipadā) leading to long life, namely: having abandoned the killing of living beings, one abstains from killing living beings; with rod laid down, with weapon laid down, conscientious, given to kindness, one dwells compassionate for the welfare of all living beings.
