[620] "'The six external sense bases (āyatana) should be understood' — thus indeed this was said. And with reference to what was this said? There are the sense base of forms, the sense base of sounds, the sense base of odors, the sense base of tastes, the sense base of tangibles, and the sense base of dhammas. 'The six external sense bases should be understood' — thus, what was said was said with reference to this.
