[63] "And how, Ānanda, is there the further penalty (tassapāpiyasikā)? Here, Ānanda, bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of a grave offense (āpatti) of such a kind — one entailing defeat (pārājika) or bordering on defeat: 'Does the venerable one recall having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat?' He says: 'No, friends, I do not recall having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat.' Though he tries to extricate himself, the accuser presses him further: 'Come now, let the venerable one know well whether he recalls having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat.' He says: 'Friends, I do not recall having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat; but I do recall, friends, having committed a minor offense of such a kind.' Though he tries to extricate himself, the accuser presses him further: 'Come now, let the venerable one know well whether he recalls having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat.' He says: 'Friends, having committed this minor offense, I will acknowledge it even unasked; how then, having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat — will I not acknowledge it when asked?' The accuser says: 'Friend, having committed this minor offense, you would not acknowledge it unasked; how then, having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat — will you acknowledge it unasked? Come now, let the venerable one know well whether he recalls having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat.' He says: 'Friends, I do recall having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat. It was in jest that I said this, it was in a rash blurting-out that I said this: "I do not recall having committed a grave offense of such a kind — one entailing defeat or bordering on defeat."' Thus, Ānanda, there is the further penalty. And thus comes about the settlement of certain disciplinary issues (adhikaraṇa) here — namely, by the further penalty."
