[708] When this was said, the venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, may the Blessed One accept the new pair of cloths from Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī. Venerable sir, Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī has been of great service to the Blessed One: as his mother's sister, she was the one who raised him, the one who nurtured him, the giver of milk; when the Blessed One's own mother had died, she suckled him at her breast. The Blessed One too, venerable sir, has been of great service to Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī. It is owing to the Blessed One, venerable sir, that Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī has gone to the Buddha for refuge, gone to the Dhamma for refuge, gone to the Saṅgha for refuge. It is owing to the Blessed One, venerable sir, that Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī abstains from the destruction of life, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from false speech, abstains from wines, liquors, and intoxicants, which are a basis for negligence. It is owing to the Blessed One, venerable sir, that Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī possesses unwavering confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha, possesses unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, possesses unwavering confidence in the Saṅgha, and possesses the virtues (sīla) dear to the noble ones. It is owing to the Blessed One, venerable sir, that Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī is free from doubt about suffering (dukkha), free from doubt about the origin of suffering, free from doubt about the cessation of suffering, free from doubt about the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering. The Blessed One too, venerable sir, has been of great service to Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī."
