[709] "So it is, Ānanda! So it is, Ānanda! When, Ānanda, owing to one person, another person has gone for refuge (saraṇa) to the Buddha, has gone for refuge to the Dhamma, has gone for refuge to the Saṅgha — I say it is not easy for this person to repay that person, that is to say, by paying homage, by rising up in respect, by reverential salutation with joined palms, by proper acts of respect, or by providing robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.
When, Ānanda, owing to one person, another person abstains from the destruction of life, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from misconduct in sensual pleasures, abstains from false speech, and abstains from liquor, wine, and intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness — I say it is not easy for this person to repay that person, that is to say, by paying homage, by rising up in respect, by reverential salutation with joined palms, by proper acts of respect, or by providing robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.
When, Ānanda, owing to one person, another person comes to possess unwavering confidence (aveccappasāda) in the Buddha, comes to possess unwavering confidence in the Dhamma, comes to possess unwavering confidence in the Saṅgha, and comes to possess the virtues dear to the noble ones — I say it is not easy for this person to repay that person, that is to say, by paying homage, by rising up in respect, by reverential salutation with joined palms, by proper acts of respect, or by providing robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.
When, Ānanda, owing to one person, another person becomes free of doubt regarding suffering (dukkha), free of doubt regarding the origin (samudaya) of suffering, free of doubt regarding the cessation (nirodha) of suffering, and free of doubt regarding the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering — I say it is not easy for this person to repay that person, that is to say, by paying homage, by rising up in respect, by reverential salutation with joined palms, by proper acts of respect, or by providing robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick."
