[108] Not by mere speech, nor solely by listening, can one advance along this firm path of practice (paṭipadā), by which the wise, the meditators, are released from the bondage of Māra; truly, the wise do not pretend, having understood the way of the world; having known fully, the wise are quenched (nibbutā), having crossed over the entanglement (visattikā) in the world.
