[366] Now on that occasion the brahmin youth Sudassana was standing behind King Pasenadi of Kosala.
Then King Pasenadi of Kosala addressed the brahmin youth Sudassana: "Come, dear Sudassana. Learn this verse in the presence of the Blessed One and recite it whenever my meal is served; and I shall provide you daily with a hundred kahāpaṇas as a perpetual allowance (niccabhatta)."
"Most excellent, sir!" the brahmin youth Sudassana replied in assent to King Pasenadi of Kosala. Having learned this verse in the presence of the Blessed One, he would recite it whenever King Pasenadi of Kosala's meal was served:
"For a person who is always mindful,
who knows moderation in the food he has obtained,
feelings (vedanā) become slight;
slowly he ages, guarding his life span."
