[379] "Diligence (appamāda), great king, is the one thing which, having taken hold of both kinds of good, keeps them secure: the good pertaining to the present life and the good pertaining to the life to come.
"Just as, great king, whatever footprints there are of creatures that roam the land, all of them are comprised within the elephant's footprint, and the elephant's footprint is declared the foremost among them, that is, by reason of its great size — even so, great king, diligence is the one thing which, having taken hold of both kinds of good, keeps them secure: the good pertaining to the present life and the good pertaining to the life to come."
