[407] "What do you think, great king? Suppose that here war had presented itself to you and a battle were massed in array. Then there should come a khattiya youth — untrained, without a practiced hand, undrilled, unpracticed in archery — timid, trembling, easily terrified, quick to flee. Would you maintain that man, and would you have need of such a man?" "Venerable sir, I would not maintain that man, and I would have no need of such a man." "Then there should come a brāhmaṇa youth, untrained … Then there should come a vessa youth, untrained … Then there should come a sudda youth, untrained … 'and I would have no need of such a man.'"
