[452] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Deer Park at Maddakucchi.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One's foot had been wounded by a splinter. Intense indeed were the feelings (vedanā) that assailed the Blessed One — bodily feelings, painful (dukkhā), sharp, harsh, bitter, disagreeable, and unpleasant. These the Blessed One endured, mindful and clearly comprehending (sato sampajāno), without being distressed.
Then the Blessed One, having spread out his outer robe (saṅghāṭi) folded in four, lay down on his right side in the lion's posture (sīhaseyyā), placing one foot upon the other, mindful and clearly comprehending.
