[476] Then Māra the Evil One, having known with his own mind the reflection in the Blessed One's mind, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, he said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, let the Blessed One exercise rulership! Let the Fortunate One (sugato) exercise rulership — without killing and without causing killing, without dispossessing and without causing dispossession, without sorrowing and without causing sorrow — righteously (dhammena)!"
"But what do you see in me, Evil One, that you speak to me thus: 'Venerable sir, let the Blessed One exercise rulership! Let the Fortunate One exercise rulership — without killing and without causing killing, without dispossessing and without causing dispossession, without sorrowing and without causing sorrow — righteously'?"
"Venerable sir, the four bases of spiritual power (iddhipāda) have been developed by the Blessed One, cultivated, made a vehicle, made a basis, steadily maintained, consolidated, and thoroughly undertaken. And if he should so wish, venerable sir, the Blessed One might resolve upon Himavant, the king of mountains, as nothing but gold — and it would become a mountain of gold."
