[563] Thus have I heard.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
Now on that occasion the son of a certain brahmin lady, Brahmadeva by name, had gone forth into homelessness in the presence of the Blessed One. Then the Venerable Brahmadeva—dwelling alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute—before long realized for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, that unsurpassed consummation of the holy life (brahmacariya) for the sake of which clansmen rightly go forth from home into homelessness, and having entered upon it, he dwelt therein. He directly knew: "Destroyed is birth (jāti), the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this state of being." And the Venerable Brahmadeva became one of the arahants.
