[726] When this was said, the brahmin householders of Khomadussa said to the Blessed One: "Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! Just as, Master Gotama, one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the path to one who is lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those who have eyes might see forms — even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by Master Gotama. We here go for refuge (saraṇa) to Master Gotama, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May Master Gotama remember us as lay followers (upāsakā) who have gone for refuge from this day forth, for as long as life lasts."

Kasi, Udaya, Devahita, a certain one of great wealth (aññatara-mahāsāla);
Mānatthaddha and Paccanika, Navakamma, Kaṭṭhahāra;
Mātuposaka, Bhikkhaka, Saṅgārava — with Khomadussa, these are twelve.
