[749] Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa extolled the Blessed One to his face with fitting verses:
"More than a thousand bhikkhus attend upon the Sugata
as he teaches the dust-free Dhamma — Nibbāna, with no peril from any quarter.
They listen to the stainless Dhamma taught by the Perfectly Enlightened One;
truly resplendent is the Fully Enlightened One, honoured at the head of the Saṅgha of bhikkhus.
You are Nāga by name, O Blessed One, the seventh seer among seers;
having become like a great cloud, you rain down upon your disciples.
Having come forth from his daytime abode, out of desire to see the Teacher,
your disciple Vaṅgīsa, O great hero, venerates your feet."
"Vaṅgīsa, were these verses thought out by you beforehand, or did they occur to you on the spot?"
"Venerable sir, these verses were not thought out by me beforehand; rather, they occurred to me right on the spot."
"In that case, Vaṅgīsa, may verses never thought out beforehand occur to you in even greater measure."
