[755] Then it occurred to the Venerable Vaṅgīsa: "This Blessed One is dwelling at Rājagaha, at the Black Rock (Kāḷasilā) on the Isigili slope, together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, some five hundred bhikkhus, all of them arahants; and the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna is searching their minds (citta) with his own mind — minds fully liberated, without acquisitions (nirūpadhi). What if I were to extol the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna in the presence of the Blessed One with fitting verses?"
Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms in reverential salutation toward the Blessed One, and said this to the Blessed One: "An inspiration has come to me, Blessed One! An inspiration has come to me, Fortunate One (Sugata)!"
"Let your inspiration come forth, Vaṅgīsa," said the Blessed One.
