[758] Then it occurred to the Venerable Vaṅgīsa: "This Blessed One is dwelling at Campā, on the bank of the Gaggarā lotus pond, together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus — with about five hundred bhikkhus, with seven hundred lay followers (upāsaka) [2], and with many thousands of deities (devatā) — and the Blessed One outshines them in beauty and in glory. What if I were to extol the Blessed One in his presence with a fitting verse?" Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa rose from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and, raising his joined palms in reverence toward the Blessed One, said to the Blessed One: "An inspiration comes to me, Blessed One! An inspiration comes to me, Fortunate One (Sugata)!" "Let the inspiration come to you, Vaṅgīsa," said the Blessed One.
