[918] There, bhikkhus, the Tāvatiṃsa devas grumbled, complained, and criticized: "It is astounding indeed, sirs! It is amazing indeed, sirs! For this young deva (devaputta), when formerly he was a human being, was a poor human being, a miserable human being, a wretched human being; yet with the breakup of the body, after death, he has been reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world, in companionship with the Tāvatiṃsa devas, and he outshines the other devas in both beauty and glory." Then, bhikkhus, Sakka, lord of the devas (devānaminda), addressed the Tāvatiṃsa devas: "Dear sirs, do not grumble at this young deva. This young deva, dear sirs, when formerly he was a human being, undertook faith (saddhā) in the Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya) proclaimed by the Tathāgata, undertook virtue (sīla), undertook learning (suta), undertook generosity (cāga), undertook wisdom (paññā). Having undertaken faith in the Dhamma and Discipline proclaimed by the Tathāgata, having undertaken virtue, having undertaken learning, having undertaken generosity, having undertaken wisdom, with the breakup of the body, after death, he has been reborn in a good destination, in a heavenly world, in companionship with the Tāvatiṃsa devas, and he outshines the other devas in both beauty and glory."
