[166] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Ñātika, in the Brick House (giñjakāvasatha). Then the Blessed One, while alone in seclusion, uttered this exposition of the Dhamma (dhammapariyāya):
"In dependence on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness (cakkhuviññāṇa) arises; the meeting of the three is contact (phassa); with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā); with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā); with craving as condition, clinging (upādāna) … Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha).
In dependence on the ear and sounds … in dependence on the nose and odours … in dependence on the tongue and tastes … in dependence on the body and tangibles … in dependence on the mind and mental phenomena (dhammā), mind-consciousness (manoviññāṇa) arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling; with feeling as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging … Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering."
