[163] On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Ñātika, in the Brick House. Then the Blessed One, while alone in seclusion, uttered this exposition of the Dhamma:
"In dependence on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. With contact as condition, feeling (vedanā) [arises]; with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā); with craving as condition, clinging; with clinging as condition, existence; with existence as condition, birth; with birth as condition, aging and death (jāti, jarā, maraṇa), sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha). …
"In dependence on the tongue and tastes, [tongue-consciousness] arises. …
"In dependence on the mind and dhammas, mind-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. With contact as condition, feeling; with feeling as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging; with clinging as condition, existence; with existence as condition, birth; with birth as condition, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering."
