[201] "Bhikkhus, suppose that, depending on oil and depending on a wick, an oil lamp were burning, and a man from time to time would pour oil into it and tend the wick. Then indeed, bhikkhus, that oil lamp, with that as its nutriment, with that as its fuel, would burn for a long time, for a long stretch of time. So too, bhikkhus, for one who dwells contemplating gratification (assāda) in things conducive to the fetters (saṃyojaniyā dhammā), craving (taṇhā) increases. With craving as condition, clinging (upādāna) [comes to be]; with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging and death (jarā-maraṇa), sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this entire mass of suffering (dukkha)."
