[226] "Ānanda, for one who dwells contemplating gratification (assāda) in things subject to clinging (upādāniyā dhammā), craving (taṇhā) increases. With craving as condition, clinging (upādāna) comes to be; with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth; with birth as condition, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair come into being. Such is the origin of this entire mass of suffering (dukkha)."
