Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Nidānavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 16 · Section 200

[200] Dwelling at Sāvatthī ... There the Blessed One ... "Bhikkhus, for one who dwells contemplating gratification (assāda) in things that fetter (saññojaniyā dhammā), craving (taṇhā) increases. With craving (taṇhā) as condition, clinging (upādāna); with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging and death (jarā-maraṇa), sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)."
