[196] Dwelling at Sāvatthī … There the Blessed One … "Bhikkhus, for one who dwells contemplating gratification (assāda) in things subject to clinging (upādāniyā dhammā), craving (taṇhā) increases. With craving as condition, clinging (upādāna) comes to be; with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging and death (jarāmaraṇa), sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair come to be. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)."
