[204] Dwelling at Sāvatthī… There the Blessed One… "Bhikkhus, suppose an oil lamp were burning in dependence on oil and in dependence on a wick, and a man from time to time would pour oil into it and adjust the wick. Then, bhikkhus, that oil lamp, with that as its nutriment, with that as its fuel (tadāhāro tadupādāno), would burn for a long, long time. So too, bhikkhus, when one dwells contemplating gratification (assāda) in things that can fetter (saññojaniyesu dhammesu), craving (taṇhā) increases. With craving as condition, clinging (upādāna) comes to be… Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)."
