[240] Dwelling at Sāvatthī … There the Blessed One … : "Bhikkhus, there are these four nutriments (āhāra) for the maintenance of beings that have come to be (bhūta) and for the assistance of those seeking birth (sambhavesī). What four? Edible food (kavaḷīkāro āhāro), coarse or fine; contact (phassa) is the second; mental volition (manosañcetanā) is the third; consciousness (viññāṇa) is the fourth. These, bhikkhus, are the four nutriments for the maintenance of beings that have come to be and for the assistance of those seeking birth."
