[28] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
"Bhikkhus, there are these four nutriments (āhārā) for the maintenance of beings that have come to be and for the assistance of those seeking a new existence. What four? Edible food (kavaḷīkāra āhāra), gross or subtle; contact (phassa) is the second; mental volition (manosañcetanā) is the third; consciousness (viññāṇa) is the fourth. These, bhikkhus, are the four nutriments for the maintenance of beings that have come to be and for the assistance of those seeking a new existence."
